Why I Prescribe Antibiotics

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gabe_Mirkin,_M.D.] Gabe Mirkin, M.D. I am often asked why I prescribe antibiotics to my patients with rheumatoid or reactive arthritis, late-onset asthma, Crohn’s disease, fibromyalgia and other so-called “autoimmune diseases”. Before I prescribe any medication, I ask myself whether it will help or hurt. All of the “auto-immune” diseases cause severe disability. Conventional medications neither cure these diseases nor stop the progressive destruction that they cause. Doctors prescribe immune suppressives that sometimes have deadly effects. Antibiotics are far safer than the drugs conventionally used to treat these diseases. So, if antibiotics can be shown to help control these diseases, they should be used long before a doctor thinks of using the conventional immune suppressives. When a germ gets into your body, you are supposed to produce cells and proteins called antibodies that attach to and kill that germ. These diseases are felt by many doctors to be caused by your own immunity. Instead of doing its job of killing germs, your immunity attacks your own tissue. If it attacks your joints, it is called reactive arthritis; if it attacks your intestines, it’s called Crohn’s disease; your colon, it’s called ulcerative colitis; and if it fills your lungs with mucous, it’s called late-onset asthma. I do not believe that your immunity is that stupid. Accumulating data show that all of these conditions can be caused by infection. Many diseases that were thought to be autoimmune turn out to be infections: stomach ulcers are caused by bacterium, helicobacter pylori and others; multiple sclerosis may be caused by HHS-6 virus; rheumatic fever is caused by the bacterium, beta streptococcus, group A; Gillian-Barre syndrome may be caused by the bacterium, campylobacter; Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis by E. Coli, Klebsiella, Bacteroides or Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis; and so forth. Shouldn’t We Be Concerned About Resistant Bacteria? The argument that giving antibiotics causes bacteria to be resistant to that antibiotic is reasonable, but it has no place in discouraging people with these diseases from taking them. First, these people have serious diseases that cause permanent damage and death. Second, the treatments that are available are toxic, shorten life, cause cancer, and have to be followed with frequent blood tests. On the other hand, I prescribe derivatives of tetracycline and erythromycin. These drugs are extraordinarily safe and do not require drawing frequent blood tests. If you were to become infected subsequently with bacteria that are resistant to these antibiotics, you would have lost nothing. No reasonable doctor would prescribe erythromycin or tetracycline for acute serious diseases, such as meningitis, pneumonia or an abscess, because tetracyclines and erythromycins do not kill germs, they only stop them from multiplying. Instead, doctors prescribe far more bacteriocidal antibiotics that kill bacteria. Many doctors criticize my use of antibiotics, but antibiotics are far safer than conventional treatment, cost less, can be administered by a general practitioner, and often cure the condition, rather than just suppressing symptoms. I know that the most physicians who develop these conditions will treat themselves with antibiotics because they know that conventional treatments with prednisone, chloroquine, azathioprine and methotrexate are toxic, and treatment with erythromycins and tetracyclines is safe. However, treatment of many conditions with long term antibiotics is controversial and not accepted by most doctors; discuss your particular condition with your doctor. How you can help to prevent antibiotic-resistant bacteria: Suffer through short-term illnesses. Don’t ask your doctor for antibiotics when you have a cold, flu or other self-limiting illness. You may feel miserable, but antibiotics are useless against viruses. Finish your prescription. If you stop taking a prescribed antibiotic as soon as you feel better, you encourage the development of resistant organisms. Become a vegetarian. The bulk of antibiotics are given to animals raised for food. As long as humans demand huge amounts of meat, farmers will use whatever means they have to deliver their product economically. Definitions: Bacteriocidal Antibiotics, such as penicillins and cephalosporins, kill bacteria. They are used to combat most bacterial infections, particularly acute, serious diseases such as meningitis, pneumonia, a ruptured intestine or an abcess. However, most bacteriocidal antibiotics are not effective against chlamydia, mycoplasma or ureaplasma, bacteria that have no cell walls. Bacteriostatic Antibiotics such as tetracyclines (including doxycycline and minocycline) and erythromycins (including Biaxin and Azithromycin) keep bacteria from multiplying. Your own immunity is then able to kill the bacteria and remove them from circulation. You have to find what works for you from a wide variety of sources, expand your knowledge and accept no one thing as being the best for your health. Some very simple things to keep in mind is that the body runs on food and if you give it the best quality food, in whatever manor that happens to be, then youll probably get some good results in general. Keep the nutrition to a maximum by eating as close to nature as possible, organic where possible and eliminating processed foods and trans fats. 2. Find a mentor. Someone whos been there, done that and that you can model . I realized at quite an early age that if we can model someone whos been there and done that and gotten results, then you can cut to the chase as it were to find out what works for your health and weight loss - what doesnt and in doing so get results faster. Find a mentor, a role model for the things that youre looking for. If its weight loss or to improve your health, find someone whos walked in your footsteps and knows what youre going through. Model them. Do what they did, repeat their process and contact them to ask what worked and what didnt. You can save yourself a lot of time and effort by doing what works and skipping what doesnt. 3. Apply the knowledge you learn about health on a daily basis This is where the taking action part comes in. You must begin to apply the knowledge youve gained from what youve read about health or watched and by talking with people whove been there before you. If you do not put it into practice then youve become an information junkie and not someone who follows through on their knowledge. You must begin to work the principles youve learned on a daily basis and keep at it. Without the trial and error, you get nowhere fast and wont truly know what works and what doesnt. 4. Repeat steps one, two and three Remember, there is no right way or wrong way to lose weight, improve your health or get what you want. You must continue to learn and challenge what youve read. Im told that what I teach is wrong and I ask what were your results when you tried it? Well, they didnt try it and so I then ask what right do you have to tell me what I teach is wrong. It may have worked for me or for many people I coach including yourself, but without trying it and challenging it, you wont ever know. Keep learning about health, keep reading, keep applying what youve read and this new knowledge. Begin the process of filtering for yourself what will and wont work for you. Remember this is about you, not me or the other guy, but what will help you achieve your weight loss goals or your health. This may very well be about applying certain fitness principles that sound so controversy that you figure they cant possibly work. One of my favorite sayings is believe nothing I say, but I challenge you to prove me wrong. My intent is to have you try it. When I first begun my journey to lose 300 pounds, I read one book and I preached the principles like they were the gospel. I was finally told to shut up and read something else, so I took it upon myself to learn whatever I could about health and weight loss. I began to apply my new knowledge daily, found people who had used the info before and what they believed about it, what worked for them for their health and then discovered for myself what worked. Finally, I discovered the ultimate secret to health and weight loss. 5. Never give up. It never ends. In the large scope of your life, the next 30, 40, 50 or more years, what is a few days if you happen to get off track. 8 Metabolism Boosters for Weight Loss: Do They Work?

And if not, what can you do about it to boost your metabolism and burn fat to lose weight? Your metabolism is basically how many calories you burn each day. Children have faster metabolic rates than adults, and we all know about the legendary metabolism’s of teenage boys. That’s the metabolism you wish you had. And while it is inevitable that your metabolism decreases with age, it doesn’t doom you to gaining weight. It might even decrease 30% over your life, but really, is that any reason to become overweight? No way. Here are 8 possible metabolic boosters and the truth about whether each works. 1) Strength training Claim: Boosts metabolism up to 10% after a training program True! In fact, despite what many men and women think, harder exercise is better for your metabolism. However, please note that 1 pound of muscle does not burn 50 calories per day. In one study, women received a greater metabolic boost from using 8 repetitions per set rather than traditional high-rep (12 reps) sets. So stick to harder exercises (pushups and more advanced versions) or even dumbbell exercises. 2) Breakfast Claim: Because it stops your “fasting”, it can boost metabolism True? Maybe yes, maybe no. Your metabolism won’t go into “starvation mode” without breakfast, but it is associated with successful weight loss. So make it a habit to consume some protein, fiber, & fruit at this time. This will keep your appetite in check till your next break or even lunch. 3) Green Tea Claim: Burns an extra 80 calories per day True? Not really. It has been shown to burn 80 calories per day in young men on the first day of supplementation, but will this affect last once your body gets used to it? I don’t think. After all, take a look at caffeine. You can find studies that show it increases metabolism as well. But really, is anyone losing fat with caffeine? The revolving doors at Starbucks say “No!”. Coffee is okay in moderate doses, and I recommend Green Tea to everyone, but for health reasons, not for fat loss. The only way you will lose fat with Green Tea is if you replace a 300+-calorie Frappucino with an iced, unsweetened Green Tea. Otherwise, don’t count on it for much in terms of metabolism. 4) Fat Burners Claim: Boost your metabolism big time! See above. Fat burners are simply caffeine pills with a few other ingredients thrown in. You’ll get an increase in mental energy, but that doesn’t mean it will significantly boost metabolism or burn fat. 5) Ice Cold Water with Lemon Juice Squeezed into it Claim: The body will burn calories warming up the water and the lemon juice also burns more fat. Truth? Nice in theory, short in practice. Nobody is losing fat with ice cold water. If it sounds too good to be true - you know the rest of the story. 6) Eating 6 small meals per day Claim: Boosts metabolism and can help control cholesterol. True! Simple and effective, and true! Try and split your meals up into smaller meals that can be eaten over the course of the day. This might be part of the breakfast magic… 7) Protein Claim: Burns more calories (uses more calories in digestion than carbohydrates or fat). True! Now I’m not sure if this is significant, but protein also helps fill you up longer. And that’s where the real benefit comes in - preventing overeating. And if you want details, another study showed that animal protein results in more energy burned than vegetable protein. 8) Interval training Claim: Interval training causes a greater increase in post-exercise metabolism than regular cardio. Whether its true or not, I do know this. A recent study from Australia found that a shorter interval program led to more weight loss than a twice-as-long aerobic training program. This confirms the original interval training study from as far back as 1994 that showed greater results from a shorter interval program when compared to a traditional cardio program. Bottom line: Intervals work! So we see that hard work and diligent eating burn more calories and that magic pills and potions don’t work. But that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. My advice? Add strength, intervals, mini-meals, and protein to your weight loss plan and you’ll be leaner and warmer thanks to your faster metabolism. How to Get Buy-In for Important Marketing and Branding Initiatives

By Marcia Hoeck Whats the best way to get decision makers all on the same page when important marketing and communications outcomes are at stake? What can you do when design and branding decisions need to be made by a group especially by a group of executives who dont necessarily value the creative process? Its important to help people make connections. A method is needed to help make the connection between the unspoken, emotional aspects of peoples feelings and perceptions about a company, product, or service, and the visual representation of it a tricky thing to understand for most people. The problem Often, brands, logos, and graphics are created by outside marketing firms without executive level input, and are based on a designers interpretation of communication value. There is often a substantial gap between the designers natural understanding of the creative process and the lack of this understanding on the part of the individuals in the company who are purchasing the creative solution. This gap causes company management to relate to the visual representations on the surface, out of context, and with knee-jerk reactionseven if they understand the objectives used by the designer to develop the solution. In the absence of a process to bridge this gap, personal likes and dislikes are used to evaluate the appropriateness of the creative solution, as individuals have little else on which to base their reactions. When youve got a group of decision makers to satisfy, this is bad news. As everyones personal likes and dislikes are going to be different, coming to agreement can be very difficult. The solution The solution is to bring the people responsible for the approval and ultimate use of the visual solution into the creative process at the beginning and have them involved in the creative development. With the groups participation, everyones input is prioritized and put into context, and relationships between graphic elements and their purpose can be explored. This process helps to bridge the communication gap and match specific objectives with visual interpretation and/or wording in a way that makes use of each persons valuable insight about the organization, its products and/or services, and its objectives for the future. Understanding, agreement, and ownership are all outcomes of this method. The process is relatively simple. An initial session can take between two and three hours to complete, depending on the amount of discussion that is a byproduct of the session. When to use it Obviously, you wouldnt use this process for every marketing or communication project that comes across your desk. But for the larger ones, like branding your organization or major marketing campaigns, the addition of a process like this can save time and large amounts of resources in the long run, allowing you to avoid multiple expensive false starts. How it works There are three main parts of the session: 1.) determining where everyone stands at the start, in terms of understanding the objective and why its being undertaken 2.) identifying everyones current perceptions regarding the objective, and 3.) identifying where the group wants to end up in terms of future perceptions for the initiative. After all of these elements are identified through exercises, discussion uncovers similarities and direction that can be agreed upon. These will be the basis for the creative direction. The details 2 to 3-hour working session Attended by everyone who has a voice in the outcome No more than 25, no less than 4 attendees Review of the structure of the session Baseline Brainstorming — the group will participate in a working session to identify individual understanding of the objectives. Current and Desired Perceptions — this two-part exercise helps to identify current and desired future perceptions of the initiative. Emotional Tests — The group reacts to common graphic and communication elements as they relate to previously defined desired future perceptions. The group rates and categorizes communication elements for appropriateness for the initiative. Summary and Review Progress and direction are reviewed Next steps defined Results Report and Creative Development Information gathered at this session is condensed and organized into a report for team approval of direction. After approval of results report, creative conceptualization is begun by design team. Group Assessment Group critiques creative solutions Direction approved, or Feedback is given for further development When embarking on major marketing or branding campaigns, organizations that take the time to lay the groundwork with this critical process will pave the way for group buy-in, saving time and large amounts of resources.
